McDonald’s Closes CosMc’s Locations, Plans Smaller Replacements
The fast-food giant refines its CosMc’s spin-off concept with two new restaurants featuring smaller formats in Texas.

McDonald’s is reportedly closing three CosMc’s spin-off restaurants in Texas, just over a year after launching the concept. CosMc’s, introduced in December 2023, aimed to offer a unique twist on the McDonald’s brand, featuring exclusive menu items such as signature coffees and McFlurry treats. However, the company is now pivoting to smaller-format stores that better align with customer preferences.
The spin-off concept was inspired by the McDonaldland character CosMc, an orange alien in an astronaut suit. While the original plan saw seven CosMc’s locations open—six in Texas and one in Illinois—half of the Texas restaurants have now been shuttered. McDonald’s explained in a press release that the decision reflects customer demand for smaller, more adaptable dining spaces.
Despite the closures, McDonald’s is moving forward with the CosMc’s brand. The company has announced plans to open two new, smaller-format locations in Texas. These streamlined stores will allow McDonald’s to experiment with tailored customer experiences, leveraging insights gained from the initial launch.
