Twitch Finally Tells Streamers Exactly Why They're Banned in Major Update
Twitch is taking significant steps to enhance transparency around its ban system
Twitch is taking significant steps to enhance transparency around its ban system, a topic that has stirred considerable debate within the streaming community. At TwitchCon 2024, the platform unveiled a series of reforms aimed at clarifying the reasons behind suspensions. This initiative responds to ongoing calls from creators for more detailed explanations regarding infractions that lead to bans.
Strike System
We’re updating our approach to strikes by introducing strike expiration. Low-severity strikes will no longer put streamers’ livelihoods at risk, but we’ll still enforce the rules for major violations. One of the key changes will be the inclusion of chat excerpts in emails sent to users when they receive a ban notification. This means streamers will know exactly what messages triggered the action. Additionally, Twitch plans to provide clips of the violations, allowing creators to see firsthand what went wrong during their streams or video on demand (VOD). This move not only helps streamers understand their mistakes but also fosters a learning environment.
Twitch has also acknowledged that its current strike system can unfairly impact long-time streamers. In response, starting in 2025, strikes will begin to expire based on the severity of the violation. This change aims to protect streamers from being permanently banned over minor infractions that could easily be addressed.
While the exact date for when clips will start being sent out remains unclear, Twitch has committed to implementing these changes in the near future. The platform hopes these measures will enhance clarity about its enforcement policies while minimizing the risk of streamers losing their accounts for low-level violations. Despite these improvements, Twitch has reiterated that serious infractions will still result in suspensions, including indefinite bans when necessary.
