Twitch increases sub prices in Canada, UK, Australia, and Turkey
The US is likely to follow in the future and see an increase
In a strategic move to enhance its financial stability, Twitch is implementing significant changes. These adjustments come amidst a reassessment of streamers' Prime subscription earnings, marking the platform's first-ever subscription price increase.
Twitch asserts that these changes are necessary to ensure streamer revenues keep pace with rising operational costs and to reflect local currency fluctuations. These adjustments are being rolled out first in key markets such as the UK, Canada, Australia, and Turkey.
In a notable contrast to the relatively modest adjustments seen in the UK, Canada, and Australia, Turkey is preparing for a substantial surge in subscription rates across all tiers. Effective March 28, subscribers in these regions will witness an uptick in Tier 1 subscription and gift sub costs. For example, the base/gift sub fee in the UK will shift from £5 to £6, while in Canada, it will leap from $7 CAD to $8, and in Australia, from $8 AUD to $9. In Turkey, however, the price surge will be significant, with a Tier 1 sub costing 43.90 lira ($1.42) instead of the current 9.90 lira (32 cents), reflecting the significant devaluation of the Turkish lira over the past decade and a half. Interestingly, subscription rates for Tiers 2 and 3 will remain unchanged in these regions.
On a positive note, streamers will continue to enjoy an unaltered revenue share, indicating potential gains for those in the UK, Canada, Australia, and Turkey. Twitch has also announced modifications to streamer payouts from Prime subscriptions, transitioning to a fixed amount model based on the subscriber's location. Additionally, the platform is streamlining access to the Partner Plus program for smaller streamers, offering a more favorable subscription revenue split.
Crucially, these price adjustments specifically apply to subscriptions purchased through the web. Plans to extend the updates to Twitch's mobile apps are in the works, anticipated in the coming months. Additionally, Twitch executives have hinted at a possible price increase in the US, citing the interconnectedness of markets and recent global adjustments. They are currently refining the details to ensure the new pricing accurately reflects market dynamics and are expected to roll out the changes when they are confident in the revised pricing structure.
